Referrals let your existing members bring new members into the program. When a referred member becomes active, or makes their first purchase, you can reward the new member, the referrer, or both — turning your membership base into a growth channel.

Referrer Code

Each member can have a Referrer Code: an optional text field used to identify them as a referrer. If provided, it must be unique among all members. A member can share their Referrer Code or email address with the people they refer, which can be used to record the referral.

Referring a New Member

When creating a new member, whether via API or administratively, you can specify who referred them by providing the referrer’s:
  • External ID
  • Referrer Code
  • Email Address
Members cannot be referred by themselves.

Referral History

If a new member was referred, the referrer is recorded on their profile in a field called Referred By, for historical reference. The list of members a member has referred is accessible from their own record page, so you can see everyone they’ve brought into the program at a glance.

Reward the New Member and the Referrer

Referrals are rewarded through Incentive Rules, the same way as any other member behavior, based on two moments in the new member’s lifecycle:
  • Upon Referral: When a referred member first becomes Open-Active, an Event of type Referred is created for the new member and an Event of type Referrer is created for the referrer. These events are only generated the first time the referred member reaches Open-Active status.
  • Upon First Purchase: When a referred member registers their first sale, an Event of type Referred Sale is created for the new member and an Event of type Referrer Sale is created for the referrer.
Because the new member and the referrer each get their own Event, you can build distinct incentive rules — with their own criteria and rewards — for each side of the referral, and choose to reward the new member, the referrer, or both, at either moment. You can also add criteria to a referrer’s rule based on the referrer’s own member status — for example, limiting eligibility to referrers who are currently Open-Active.

Limit Referrer Rewards

To prevent a single member from being rewarded an unlimited number of times for referring others, scope a Cap to the Referrer and Referrer Sale data sets. This lets you set a maximum number of times a member can be rewarded as a referrer, optionally within a rolling measurement period.
